It's Survival

I'm watching CNN right now, and I don't think words can describe how I feel as I watch what's unfolding in New Orleans. It's really a sad situation. It breaks my heart to see so many people without homes or places to go. The scenes on TV look like infomercials for help in third world countries. It's awful.
Last night, On the O'Reilly Factor, Bill referred to the looters as "thugs". To paraphrase what he said, "It's like a group of people stayed behind just to wreak havoc."
That ticked me off. Who would stay behind JUST to loot? Especially when lives are in danger. The people who stayed behind...stayed behind because had no other choice. That had nowhere to go. No Money, No Home, No Back-up Plan...NOWHERE TO GO. Many of these people are poverty stricken. They couldn't just pack up & leave.
I think it's a bit absurd and unfair to refer to these people at "thugs" or "crooks". I'm in no position to judge anyone right now. I really can't fault these people for looting. My God...if I were in their situation, I may be doing the exact same thing. When things get desperate...when your babies have no diapers, water, milk, food then you have to do what you have to do. If I had no money to purchase meds for my family in a time of crisis, then you'd better believe I'd do what I had to do. By any means.

As I Adam & I were discussing on the phone last night, I'm sure some of these people who are "looting" are christians. I'm sure God will forgive them. Heck...God has probably given some the insight to do so. As Adam so comically put it, "There's an extra case of toilet paper in aisle 6."
So...yea...I don't fault these people for taking food, toiletries & other NECESSITIES. Now the situation becomes totally outrageous and out of control when cats start taking TVs, DVD Players, Beer, Guns and all that other unnecessary bull isht.
What in hell are you gonna do with a flat screen plasma? Where are you going to take it? THERE IS NO ELECTRICITY IN THE CITY PEOPLE!
Why guns? Everyone is in the same predicament...having a gun is not going to move the process along any quicker.
[Edit 11:09pm] I won't deny that some of these people are taking this crisis as opportunity to get some free stuff. BUT...why is it referred to as "looting" when black people did it, but "finding" when other races did it?

God help the city.

I have no problem with food and hygene... it is desparation. And frankly, if I saw guys taking guns, i'd say to myself... "Uh Oh.. Those bastards are stealing guns. They're in charge unless I can say "no thanks"... Better get me a gun, too, for protection -- and one for my buddy to watch my back."
I find no excuse for stealing other stuff. That's criminal. That's wrong. They ARE THUGS. They are doing extra damage to the economy, which will only make things worse for those on the bottom end.

forgive them?
i'm not relativistic at all. but i don't think it's stealing. it's not even a matter of ethics, as far as i believe. a fool would refuse his goods to someone in need when they do you no good rotting on your shelves.
now, the real looting, however, is getting out of hand. but let 'em go ahead. can't eat no tv's. if they're stupid enough to steal them in such a time of crisis, maybe they're stupid enough to attempt to EAT the stinkin' things, and maybe they'll die from trying to eat them.
